T3 ARCHITECTS and KANOPEA Architecture Studio were selected to completely redesign an existing town house of little interest to make it a contemporary tropical town house, opening onto 2 lush gardens, functional and above all pleasant to live in for a family of 6 people. As usual, the architects’ primary intention was to carry out a complete diagnosis of the existing building with the aim of retaining everything that deserved to be in order to reduce the carbon impact of the project: concrete structure, part of the facades, roof, trees… Apart from these elements, a complete reorganization of the house was carried out, starting with the location of the stairwell in the darkest part of the house (rather than « in the middle of the living room » in the original version), the partial or total demolition of certain walls (including facade) to allow the creation of a large living space crossing on the garden level, allowing the home to be ventilated naturally and to promote views of the exterior and the creation of living spaces between the inside and the outside (covered terraces, loggias). Next, the designers’ job was to organize all the rooms to ensure that they were all naturally lit (the basis of comfort), properly protected from exposure to the sun and monsoon rains and to add the sun protections which were essential to offer the best comfort to users. This design is based on the principles of bioclimatic architecture, adapted to tropical conditions in our case, the house being located in a residential area of Saigon (Thao Dien). A lot of work was done on the design of the custom kitchen, on the selection of furniture (natural materials only), on the lighting design, and on all the details that make this project an example of sustainable rehabilitation in Vietnam. Kanopea and T3 teams also designed the tree-lined courtyard on the north side and the garden on the south side with its small swimming pool integrated into a beautiful wooden terrace.
